    Maps played at the LAN

So, even for the gold/bad and 2fort regulars, you guys were really into some of the maps like cp_well and cp_granary. Why in the hell is it so difficult for us to get games like that going on our pubs?

I mean holy shit, the most epic parts of the night (imo) were hearing 32 players screaming and roaring on point caps and that final victory cheer when one team won a 16 vs 16.

How come those maps never seem to take off on the pubs? They really are a lot of fun and they're symmetrical maps like 2fort. Minus the whole capture the flag part.

Any thoughts to this? I'm a bit baffled we got the LAN games going on maps most people don't play yet no one really bitched about them!

Re: Maps played at the LAN

seeing as half the lan was eliminated after the tounraments, I didnt go back to the maps, and pretty sure many others did the same. That and the fact there were prizes involved. Normally you wouldnt see me on some of those maps. Just dont like em much.

Agreed, but since BC2 wasn't offered on the house machines, and L4D was a bitch to try to get up, things like that happen sometimes. It probably would be better planned next time.

Re: Maps played at the LAN

I'd say it's safe to say that 1. we definitely could have planned out or done some things differently or better and 2. despite how it was done, it absolutely rocked for the first official LAN iO's ever hosted.
Rest assured the next one will be noticeably better in all areas! But we gotta start somewhere; it's a learning experience.

I'd honestly love to find a few players that liked those maps and wanted to play them a little more often then not. Granted, this is after I come back from taking a few weeks off of gaming. I put more time into TF2 this past month then I have all year. I need to get back on schedule. Staying up until 2 or 3 am both nights REALLY killed my sleeping time table here. I'm used to getting up between 5:30 and 6:30 because the baby's got me on his schedule. Sunday morning, I slept right through the wife waking up and going to the gym, coming home, turning on the light in the room, getting dressed, getting the baby, bringing him downstairs, then coming back up around 10am to wake me.
At least I was up @ 6:45 this morning! Getting back there!

Re: Maps played at the LAN

I think granary/well don't take off because each person has their favorite map: For lots of people it is 2fort, for lots of others it is goldrush/badwater. So, when they have a choice on what map to play, they will pick their favorite.

However, I think this also definitely due to the fact that we have a goldrush/badwater server, and two 2fort servers, and zero mill/granary servers. i bet you anything if we get a server with granary/mill going for a while people will start loving it just as much as I love badwater and twizzy loves l4d2.

this brings me to think that we definitely need to change the elimination tournament rules so 16 people don't immediately get kicked out of 1 of only 3 tournaments like 10 minutes into a tournament. i hope in the next lan we don't necessarily have to have more tournaments, but we need to have longer tournaments!

also, when we had the 6v6 teams, we should have definitely tried to keep the teams even, i think we really should have done captains, that way guarantees all teams to be as even as possible. also, we should have kept the teams and kept having matches with each other, for prizes or not.

another suggestion is that i think we really needed utilize the fact that we had lan servers more. saturday night at 1 AM, thor put up a crazy scout only server, maybe if we do really fun stuff like that, people will actually want to use the lan servers! instead of just playing our online ones.

Oh, that I know. You could tell who plays X class on Y map when we came to them at the LAN. (Mainly because their k:d shot through the roof!) But what fun is mastering only one class and only on one map? So many of the other really good maps never get played. It's a sad, sad shame.

Another reason why we need more community event fun nights like we have had in the past!

Yeah, I was also disappointed about that too. I still dont know what happened with the L4D2 tournament we were suppose to have Saturday night. Hopefully next time we can vary it a bit. But like I said in a previous thread, dispite that; I thought the LAN was a great success!!

That was an odd one. Despite the fact that we've played on the l4d2 pub I've setup countless times, we couldn't connect to it on the LAN. I know it works because I tested it the night before! But, for whatever reason it wasn't being seen on that network so we kind of just said screw it rather then do a half-assed local hosted tourney.

Just out of curiousity, did you remember to make a bind key in the console (bind F12 "mm_dedicated_force_servers x.y.z.w:27015") and use the bind key before you created the versus lobby?

Servers were setup with a search key and I tired setting auto discovery for local games. Still couldn't see it either way. But no, I didn't go the decicated_force_servers route although you should have mentioned this at the LAN! Again, I think possibly his firewall was screwing some things up, but the server did hit the Valve master server so I don't know why the search key didn't work.

If I'm not mistaken i think the dedicated forced server was the way we always had to connect to twizzy's server even if Twizzy was creating the lobby. I did mentioned it a couple of times while we were all in vent, but no one paid me any attention. lol Twizzy has a lot more experience with this then me so I'd defer to him. Well, at least we have something else to try next time around.

L4D/L4d2 servers have always been quirky, i really whish valve had done those servers differently, and gave us a better interface/control over them

We were using mine for a few months before Twizzy put his (vastly inferior, but modded) server up and I always used the search key. Worked all the time. Worked the night before the LAN as well!
