    Transparent Steam Message Pop-Ups

    How to make your Steam messages transparent.

    I play medic a lot and it is annoying to have a steam message pop up and block the ubercharge meter during critical moments in the game so I found a way to prevent this by changing the transparency of the pop-ups.

    •First up, open your steamscheme.res, located at steam\resource\steamscheme.res
    •Find the line (around line 48) that says “DarkClayBG” “47 49 45 255? // shadow
    •Make a copy of that line and change it to “DarkClayBGTrans” “47 49 45 120" and paste it just under the original line.
    •Now find the ToolTipBorder section, around line 2935.

    ToolTipBorder
    {
    “corner_rounding” “2?
    render_bg
    {
    “1? ”fill( x0, y0, x1, y1, DarkClayBG )”

    •Change the part that says DarkClayBG to DarkClayBGTrans
    •Save the file, start up TF2, and all your notifications should be slightly transparent.

    You can make it more or less transparent by changing the alpha number ("0" is transparent "255" is solid) "47 49 45 120" <<< where (120) is the alpha number.

    Changing Window Position and/or Timer

    If you just want to alter the position and/or the time that the pop-ups stay on the screen you can do so by changing these options that can be found under in your Steam\resource file in the steamscheme.res

    Just find the following sections to change position and timer options:

    Notifications.PanelPosition ”BottomRight”

    // Can be “BottomRight”, “BottomLeft”, “TopRight”, “TopLeft”

    *
    Notifications.SlideDirection ”Vertical”

    // Can be “Vertical”, “Horizontal”, “None” and controls slide effect

    *
    Notifications.FadeInTime ”0.55?

    // Controls the time it takes to slide/fade into view

    *

    Notifications.FadeOutTime ”0.55?

    // Controls the time it takes to slide/fade out of view

    *

    Notifications.DisplayTime ”6.0?

    // Controls the length of time at steady state after fade in and before fade out

    *

    Notifications.StackSize ”3?

    // Controls how many panels we will stack before background queuing

    All pretty self explanatory, edit them how you like and save the file.

    Hmmmmmm... More .res files for me to edit...

    The cogs in my head are starting to turn.

    :Edit: Skin-specific files are in Steam\skins\SKINNAME\resource\, by the by. For testing purposes, copy an entire skin folder and rename it, then change to that skin.

    Re: Transparent Steam Message Pop-Ups

    This is from January. Since then, Steam released a new version of the client, so that's probably why.

    Funny, I never saw this guide before on our forums. Guess you learn something new everyday.

    Re: Transparent Steam Message Pop-Ups

    Figured out how to do it post-update!

    BEFORE DOING ANYTHING, I RECOMMEND YOU MAKE A BACK-UP COPY OF YOUR (hopefully) UNMODIFIED GAMEOVERLAY.STYLES AND STEAM.STYLES FILES.

    You can find them in Steam\resource\styles\.

    The manual way that doesn't lose any already-made changes to the file:

    - Open up gameoverlay.styles.

    - Find semi_gray on line 9 (for me anyway), and under it, add:
    Code:
    		transp_black "0 0 0 90"
    		transp "0 0 0 0"

    Note: you can rename these colors to something else if you want, just make sure to also change the reference to them in the next step. If you want to just change them, change the numbers here and here alone.

    - Find the } after detailsboxtitle on line 27 (for me anyway), and under it, add:
    Code:
    		notification
    		{
    			render_bg
    			{
    				0="fill( x0, y0, x1, y1, transp )"
    			}
    			render
    			{
    				0="fill( x0, y0, x1, y1, transp_black )"
    			}
    		}

    Note: if you renamed the colors in the last step, rename them in this one, too!

    - Save the file, and open task manager to kill the process GameOverlayUI.exe in case it's running, this is so you don't have to restart Steam entirely to make it take effect.

    Lazy man's manner (also changes the position to bottom-left corner so it doesn't cover the medic's ubercharge meter) which overwrites your existing file:

    - Visit gameoverlay.styles - Paste-It.net.

    - Click "Download paste" on the right-hand side of the page.

    - Change the filetype at the bottom of the save dialog to "all files", save the file in Steam\resource\styles\ as gameoverlay.styles, overwriting the old file.

    ---

    Bonus!

    To change the position, direction of entry, fade in/out time, display time and stack size of your notification windows out of game, open up steam.styles, search (CTRL + F) for "Notification", and modify the values for:

    Code:
        Notifications.PanelPosition "BottomRight" // Can be "BottomRight", "BottomLeft", "TopRight", "TopLeft"
        Notifications.PanelPosition "TopRight" [$OSX] // the dock is on the bottom for OSX, so instead pop top right like other apps do
        Notifications.SlideDirection "none" // Can be "Vertical", "Horizontal", "None" and controls slide effect
        Notifications.FadeInTime "1" // Controls the time it takes to slide/fade into view
        Notifications.FadeOutTime "1" // Controls the time it takes to slide/fade out of view
        Notifications.DisplayTime "2" // Controls the length of time at steady state after fade in and before fade out
        Notifications.StackSize "5" // Controls how many panels we will stack before background queuing

    To change the position of your notification windows in-game, open up gameoverlay.styles, search for "Notification", and modify the value for:

    Code:
        Notifications.PanelPosition "BottomRight" // Can be "BottomRight", "BottomLeft", "TopRight", "TopLeft"

    Note: if you want to edit any of the other options that it has in steam.styles but not in gameoverlay.styles, copy them over and they'll only get applied to in-game notifications.
