need to build new home server

So my home server is getting a bit long in the tooth. It's so old it only has 1 sata port and the rest is IDE. I need to build something with a couple terabytes of storage....never thought I'd say that back when I built my first 386 with an absolutely huge 500MB hard drive. Anyway I haven't built a pc in a long time and would love some recommendations for hardware. I currently have a windows home server box. Main issues I had with that was hardware compatibility (wireless network card was a nightmare). Should I go with home server 2011? Or maybe build a linux home server Linux Home Server Guide ? It would be cool to be able to stream movies off my server with the PS3's (we have 3 in the house) or computers (4 of those).

    Thoughts or suggestions?

Re: need to build new home server

What are you looking to do with the server, is it a file server? or would you be serving web content, sql services? What else?

If you are looking purely for file serving, linux has a great os called freenas which gives you great file serving capabilities. You can also install plugins to stream to a PS3 and other devices..

Re: need to build new home server

I doubt I'll be hosting anything on the web. Mainly file server for backups and streaming media. Would also like to have it be remotely accessable from outside the house.

If you are comfortable with linux, or are willing to learn, i'd suggest FreeNAS it can do everything you need.

Re: need to build new home server

Yeah I checked out the site. I haven't used linux much but I see this version uses a gui which would be helpful as I am lost with linux command line. I have a couple older outdated computers here I may dust one off and set it up with freenas to see how I like it. Thanks.

A bunch of Linux distros these days use GUIs, so command line knowledge is not always necessary (though it does help, even with the GUI).

Re: need to build new home server

Yeah I still know all my dos command line, though haven't needed it since win98. Guess I should do some research. Never had much use for linux because I was just a gamer and linux was shit for gaming unless you were hosting dedicated servers.

I might be able to help you with any server setups if necessary. I do them all the time for my job.
