Question Computer freezes and unfreezes randomly

    Hey there!

I've been using these forums a lot for computer help recently but I can't seen to figure out my newest problem. Currently, my computer will randomly freeze for about 10-20 seconds and then unfreeze and continue as if nothing happened.

    My System:

    - MSI 970A-G46 AMD Motherboard
    - AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz Quad-Core Desktop Processor
    - Antec VP-450 450W ATX 12V v2.3 Power Supply
    - Radeon HD 6670
    - Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD (Running in UEFI BIOS)
    - 4 (2GB) sticks of RAM

Whenever I monitor my computer and look at temperatures, they are usually well below what they should be. My CPU and RAM usage are also low when the freezing occurs. In fact the computer froze while I was running BurnInTest and the test still came out with no errors. The tests were on everything but the optical drive, network, and printer. I also ran memtest86+ with no errors.

At this point I am at a complete loss as to what the problem could be. I would really like to fix it without having to do a clean install. I was thinking that it could be PSU related but I have no idea. I suppose it could also be a software issue, but I haven't heard of any programs that would cause this type of problem.

Thanks in advance for any help,
    kennethr127

These are the specs of the graphics software I have right now for my video card. You think I should try downgrading to a different driver version?

Re: Computer freezes and unfreezes randomly

I think we can rule out overheating issues. Modern systems will shutdown/restart to prevent damage to hardware. GPU's will usually just lower their clock/mem speeds and voltages.

If nothing suggested so far works, I would follow the steps below.

This could possibly be caused by Windows attempting to access a corrupted file. We can scan files for corruption by opening the Command Prompt in Admin mode. Search for cmd.exe and then right click > run as administrator. Next type "chkdsk /F". It will state that it can't run because it's in use, so just schedule the check on next startup by typing Y. Next, restart your computer to scan your disk.

After this is finished, I also suggest running "chkdsk /scan".

You said CPU/RAM usage is low when this occurs, so that rules out a possible worm.

Also can you please specify the OS you are using? Just in case, what temps are they usually at?

Are you overclocking by any chance? Also try removing 2 out of 4 sticks of ram for now. Are they all matched pair?

it was happening with mine too...sometimes freeze and i need to reboot. sometimes comes back with a "vídeo drive recovered...". after weeks trying most of everything ive discovered that was the power cable to the vídeo card that sometimes ( dunno why ) got lose..working flawless now.

Re: Computer freezes and unfreezes randomly

Thanks for the replies guys! I have a few test lined up to try right now but if none of them work I'll try what you suggest R3TRI8UTI0N . I am currently running Windows & Professional with Service Pack 1. The temps don't usually get much beyond the upper 40's in Celsius when it occurs.

KillinUSoftly ,I am not overclocking anything right now. I was going to try your suggestion because I heard somewhere else that it's possible my two pairs of RAM are not compatible.

I don't believe that the errors are caused by a lack of power to graphics card as you suggest mvqb , but I will check to rule that out though.

Re: Computer freezes and unfreezes randomly

Sorry it took so long to get back to you guys, but I tried using only one pair of RAM at a time and it still had the freezing issue. I also tried running the chkdisk /F but nothing came up that was out of the ordinary. However, I was running some programs and I noticed that the issue seems to be that the computer is not freezing but that the programs that are being used at the time are simply going in a "Not Responding" state for some reason. Any ideas?

It's really hard to troubleshoot a computer without sitting in front of it. Have you tried a previous set of display drivers yet?

Yeah, I understand it is very difficult to think of what could be wrong without seeing, but I really appreciate the help.

I have not yet tried a previous set of drivers yet. I'll put that on my list of things to try. Thanks.

If you come up with any other ideas, please let me know.
